Deb has facilitated community-driven projects with government, business and not-for-profit organisations across Qld and NSW for over 15 years. She holds a Master of Social Administration (Community Development). Deb is supporting a diverse group of community partners to implement a regional Suicide Prevention Community Action Plan (called SPCAP, under the auspice of selectability) for Whitsunday, Isaac and Mackay. The plan’s effectiveness in preventing deaths by suicide is reliant on SPCAP’s whole of community approach to embed evidence-based strategies. Deb, Di Knight (MHHS) and Laurence Manning (Grapevine) will share how SPCAP has worked together in building shared commitment, responsibility and capacity within the community and save lives.

Suicide is a whole of community issue. Lives can be saved when the whole community works collaboratively, with shared commitment and responsibility. This is the strategic approach of the Suicide Prevention Community Action Planning Group in Whitsunday, Isaac and Mackay (SPCAP). The SPCAP Group is creating a strong web of connections, trust and capacity across a range of partners to directly address the very complex task of preventing suicide. This ensures that the work will be embedded within the local community, which supports its sustainability and enables effective implementation of a suite of evidence-based strategies that would have otherwise possibly failed.
